Working under the direction of Michael Restaino and the creative team at ASNJ was a highlight for Samantha. “Michael Restaino is FIERCE. Not only Michael, but the entire creative team at ASNJ was simply wonderful! The idea of a concert styled musical was very different than anything I have ever done, especially with the use of handheld microphones as opposed to body mics. This was a fun challenge especially as an ensemble having to balance choreography with the live microphone!” The innovative concert-style staging pushed her to grow as a performer, blending high-energy musicality with theatrical storytelling.

The company’s mission to put a unique spin on established works was evident in this production. “The rock concert approach to Cruel Intentions was so much fun, and I think it totally paid off, especially for our audiences! Because the audience was able to come in with such a familiarity to the classic hits, the use of the handheld microphones, and the lighting really highlighted the comedic effect of ‘breaking away’ from the stereotypical musical theater approach, and giving the audience a concert!” Samantha notes, proud of how the bold choices connected with audiences and set the production apart.

Reflecting on her growth and ASNJ’s impact, Samantha adds, “I have grown up doing quite a bit of community theater in New Jersey, and have truly loved every company that I have worked with here. However, as I have done more and more professional theater, I have really grown to love a quick turnaround, which is something I have not experienced locally until now! Alongside this, the entire creative team truly cares so much about all of the little details of the show, and fully goes out of their way to make everyone in the rehearsal space feel loved and seen!” For Samantha, ASNJ stands out not only for its professionalism and creative vision, but for its genuine care for its artists and the community it serves.

When Samantha Ferrante joined the cast of Cruel Intentions: The 90's Musical at The Actors Studio of New Jersey, she was already familiar with the company’s stellar reputation. “I have heard from friends who have worked at ASNJ previously that they had an awesome experience! I also feel like so much ‘local’ professional theatre is mostly in New York, and having the opportunity to work professionally right at home was wonderful!” Samantha shares. The chance to perform close to home with a company known for its supportive environment made the opportunity irresistible.

Performing in a show packed with iconic ‘90s hits from the likes of Britney Spears, NSYNC, and TLC brought a vibrant new dimension to Samantha’s approach to musical theatre. “Honestly, it makes me want to add some of these songs to my audition book! I’m a singer who doesn’t have a ton of pop music in my rep, and being exposed to a theatrical take on these classic songs is so much fun and I feel like no one ever does it!” she admits, delighted by the creative challenge and the chance to reinterpret beloved pop anthems for the stage.

As an ensemble member, Samantha found herself constantly shifting roles and responsibilities onstage, which proved both challenging and exhilarating. “The most challenging, but so much fun, part of this process was having a short time span to drill harmonies, choreography and get it audience ready. But the limited time helps SO much as an actor because the ability to pick up material in a quick turn around is a huge asset to our career!” she explains, emphasizing how the fast-paced rehearsal process sharpened her skills and adaptability.
